Season 1 Summary of the Netflix series: The Art of Design questions the role innovative design plays in our everyday lives, and how it shapes and reflects our appreciation and understanding of the world around us.

The series introduces eight distinctive artists. Each episode examines the experiences that shaped their unique perspectives, and the processes they use to create new forms of expression.

The first episode follows renowned abstract illustrator Christopher Neumann’s latest cover for The New Yorker magazine. Neumann saw abstract art as a way to reduce concepts to their most essential requirements. How many elements does it take to convey an idea? He finds great inspiration in the simplicity of LEGO bricks.

“Modern athletes place far more demands on their feet than they originally did,” says footwear designer Tinker Hatfield at the start of episode two. The challenge he faces in his work is to combine pleasing aesthetics with improved performance and durability.

Es Devlin’s canvas is an empty stage. She fills the voids of these austere spaces with moving bright light and color in a variety of disciplines, from live music performances to theatrical performances. Their imaginative designs effectively deepen the audience’s investment in the play.

Other episodes of the series are just as exciting. Architect Bjarke Ingels is only limited by his dreams. Its structure pushes the boundaries of the possible with a keen eye for sustainability.

Ralph Gilles, Fiat Chrysler’s Chief Design Officer, is working to push the form, style, and function of automobiles in exciting new directions.

Graphic designer Paula Scher sees typography as “painting with words,” and her extraordinary aesthetic sensibility has been used to highlight some of the world’s most recognizable brands.

Respected photographer Plato used visual imagery to convey simple yet soulful concepts. His profile examines the medium’s ability to communicate with its audience on a deep level.

Isle Crawford’s work seeks to explore the possibilities of the spaces we inhabit most of our everyday lives. How can interior design increase our sense of humanity and well-being?

INTRODUCTION: The Art of Design features highly entertaining artist profiles. Their unique vision largely defines how we see the world.
