Today, the U.S. military’s spending represents approximately 40% of the global total. In 2012, the U.S. devoted $682 billion to its military, more than the combined spending of all of the other countries excepted.
Now that the war in Iraq is over, the number of US troops in Afghanistan will be reduced by 2014, which would seem to be the prelude to a drop in US defense spending.
Even in Washington, DC, many have advocated that the defense budget can be significantly reduced, which would lead to a “peace dividend” that can be used to address more pressing domestic concerns, such as dealing with the country’s ongoing economic issues.
