Donald Trump is the most anti-abortion president in years. He won a vicious political battle for control of the Supreme Court that could now lead to an outright ban on abortion for millions of women across the United States.
Deeyah Khan confronts people convicted of anti-abortion terrorism and anti-abortion activists who celebrated the attacks. She meets health workers who risk their lives performing abortions, and women who face some of the toughest decisions in their lives.
For decades, the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade “protected women’s right to free choice, but the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sparked a shift in Supreme Court control. The battle. These legal battles are now having a profound effect on American women. It may even mean that abortion will be banned in most of the United States one day.
For example, there are only three clinics in the entire state of Alabama that perform abortions regularly. In addition, patients arriving at the Alabama Women’s Center in Huntsville must be screened by people known as “clinic defenders,” as anti-abortion protesters line the clinic’s door every day.
Abortion can be stressful and difficult, and staff says protesters are making things worse. Dr. Robinson is the medical director of the clinic and is in charge of everything that happens there, and her partner Dalton owns her. This is one of the few abortion clinics in the United States that is owned and operated by a person of color.
Under Donald Trump’s presidency, some Republican states have passed laws severely restricting abortion. In 2019, Alabama even banned it for rape or incest. None of these state statutes could go into effect because they were struck down by the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade, but the nightmare for American abortion providers appears to have come true. If Roe v. Wade is repealed, the Alaba States such as Maryland may severely restrict or even ban abortion.
