Apollo’s New Moon

America’s first trip to the moon required tremendous determination, innovation, and courage. When Apollo 11 launched into space on July 16, 1969, the world seemed to wake up to a new realm of possibility. The mission’s success rekindled a sense of national pride and accomplishment that fueled American creativity in the decades that followed. But perhaps the most enduring legacy of the Apollo missions is more Earth-related and can be found in the materials they brought back. Through careful laboratory studies of lunar soil, rocks, and surface features, these intrepid astronauts provided a new platform from which to study the relationship between Earth and the Moon. Apollo Crescent examines these discoveries and how they redefine our understanding of the universe.

During several Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, large amounts of lunar material were collected and returned to Earth for further study. Those early rehearsals formed the basis of much of what we know today. What properties can these samples reveal about the universe billions of years ago? How do the Moon’s rocky formations and cratered surface reveal its origin and ongoing connection to our own planet? Will humanity one day find a way to colonize this gray planet?

As well as showcasing the quest for those answers, the film delves into the tools, talent and techniques that turn this most unlikely of missions into a triumphant reality. We understand the roles of individual crew members and the complex processes that enable them to advance human ambition.

The film features a series of impressive images taken directly from the Apollo spacecraft. Much of the footage has been remastered in stunning 4K clarity. Every thrilling setback and thrilling victory brings the audience into the pod and into the boundless spectacle. Engaging computer simulations complement the narrative.

The Apollo crescent is a stirring tribute to the doers who put Americans on the moon all those years ago, and a moving reminder of the lessons they took home. The journey doesn’t end when we reach our destination.
