Balochistan: Pakistan’s Other War
The ongoing dispute in the remote province of Balochistan is commonly referred to as Pakistan’s “dirty war”. Ethnic Balochi politicians and leaders discuss their aspiration to freedom from Pakistani rule.
Far from the busy cities of Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, this remote region has been the site of a 60-year-long insurgency by the Baloch ethnic minority.
However, the revolt against Pakistan’s government has received scant international attention, this is primarily because the majority of the world’s attention has been dedicated to the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda in other parts of Pakistan.
Located next to Iran and Afghanistan, Balochistan is renowned for its cross-border smuggling activities and has recently been inhabited by former members of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Only a few people outside of the region have access or permission to visit.
