Organized crime groups are deeply entrenched in Japanese history. Known as the Jakuza, they were once considered gangsters with a strict code of honor who helped the police fight the criminal underworld.

The Yakuza in Japan can be traced back 400 years to the Edo period. But long gone are the days when they protected the weak against the strong.

Today, Yakuza is a criminal network with nearly 80,000 members operating in 22 criminal groups and earning billions of dollars annually. Law enforcement in Japan hopes to wipe them out once and for all.

With links to drug and prostitution rings, corporate crime and deadly shootings, Japanese officials have sought to kill the yakuza by starving them.
