From microbrews to craft beers, the documentary Beer Culture gives you an inside look at the beer industry and its passionate brewers. The film focuses on brewers in Colorado, a state that produces more beer than any other state in the United States. The film also describes an important period in American history when a “beer renaissance” occurred and changed the way beer was commercialized. The sacrifice these entrepreneurs make to do what they love is truly inspiring.

If you can’t find the beer you’re looking for, why not make your own? This was the thought process of many immigrants who couldn’t find the beer they wanted in America, leading to the emergence of microbreweries and craft beer in order to realize the “American dream.” Many of us still live with that dream today, and it deeply resonates with the history of these hard-working winemakers.

Beer culture isn’t just about the brewer’s success. As many entrepreneurs have discovered, timing and execution play a huge role in a company’s success. Starting a brewery in a recession or a time of war is risky, and many spend long periods of time paying their employees rather than paying their own wages. The “hop crisis” of 2002 due to low crop yields was tough for some brewers, but perseverance will eventually pay off. Stories of the struggles winemakers face make one realize just how dedicated they are to their craft.

Notable Colorado breweries include Left Hand, New Belgium and Avery. Other companies still trying to break into the industry, namely Upslope, Equinox and Eddyline, while not yet household names in the industry, have proven successful. Famous or not, their passion for beer is inspiring and can be seen in the local communities in which they live.

The sense of community is strong, and many of the more established breweries donate to local food banks and charities. After going through all kinds of hardships, it is heartwarming to see the owners pass it on. Beer Culture is more than just a compelling documentary about the beer industry; it’s a reminder for everyone to pursue their passion despite the odds it may face.
