Birth in Nepal

Nepal has one of the worst maternal mortality statistics in the world, with around six women dying in childbirth every day.

Despite the political instability caused by civil war over the past decade, the Nepalese government is taking steps to improve the safety of mothers, but so far it appears to have had little effect.

Five months pregnant, Nepalese filmmaker Subina Shrestha wondered why so many mothers died in childbirth. In her upcoming report, she will examine the human stories behind these statistics.

Ten years of civil war in Nepal has claimed more than 15,000 lives. Over the same period, more than 22,000 women died in childbirth.

The war led to a revolution and an overhaul of Nepal’s political system. Yet there was little mention of maternal mortality in the newspapers.
