Bosom Bullies: Trump and Putin

The two-part documentary, “Bosom Bullies: Trump and Putin,” follows the tangle of allegations and evidence that may shed light on the complicated relationship between two of the world’s most important leaders.

The Russia story dominated President Donald Trump’s first term and was easily dismissed by both leaders. But regulators have long focused on what they see as clear signs of collusion. The filmmakers of course take the time to outline the allegations, but the movie is mostly about the similarities between these two men and how they bridge the gaps in their stories for future mutual benefit.

Part I begins with a brief history of the U.S.-Russia relationship, which was greatly strengthened during the Obama administration. Warning signs point to another Cold War.

As evidenced by the footage shown in the film, Russia announced its support for Trump through its state media ahead of election night. These two have some enemies in common. Its supporters are sympathetic to each leader’s propensity for demagoguery and provocation.

Only after Trump’s election did the examination intensify. The FBI’s mission is to investigate the notion of collusion and interference as thoroughly as possible. Many Russian players have been charged with conspiracy. The film also covers the detention of multiple Trump associates in connection with the investigation. This ongoing dynamic has divided Americans along political lines and tightened the power structure in Moscow.

The filmmakers speak for both sides of the argument as deftly as possible. It draws on irrefutable timelines of events and insights from journalists and insiders representing American and Russian perspectives. Some of those interviewed claimed the calls for intervention were absurd, while others saw real flames beneath the smoky veil of suspicion.

Much of Bosom Bullies: Trump and Putin has been headlined by newspapers and television outlets for years. But it’s instructive to see how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together to form a larger, more cohesive narrative.
