Director John Dullaghan’s biographical documentary about infamous poet Charles Bukowski, Bukowski: Born This Way is as much a moving portrait of the author as it is a sordid one. Dirty lifestyle revelations.

Extensive vintage footage of Bukowski’s poetry readings interspersed with interviews with fans of the poet, including the legendary Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Joyce Fant (John’s wife), Bono and Harry Dean Stanton .

Shot in grainy black-and-white by Bukowski’s friend Tyler Hackford due to lack of funds, the film is a romantic portrayal of Bukowski’s life of drinking and bickering, and ensured that Bukowski legendary status.

Born Into This relies on interviews with Bukowski for biographical information rather than cheesy voiceovers, bringing the viewer closer to the author.

In one stunning sequence, for example, Bukowski drives the audience around in the backseat of his car and tells us through his rearview mirror of his days as a postal worker that inspired the novel Inspiration for the post office.

Scenes splicing together interviews with Bukowski’s ex-wife Linda Lee and R. Crumb’s comic strip depicting Bukowski as a sex-obsessed lunatic set the tone for the rougher parts of the film.

Occasional lines from Bukowski’s poems appear in the film, a reminder that he was not only a raging alcoholic with wild humor but also a talented and popular author.

“Bukowski: Born This Way” features many hilarious shots of “Hank,” portraying Bukowski as a troubled but classic genius.
