Burning Man has grown from a small spontaneous gathering of people to a community of over 48,000. There are no rules about how to behave or express yourself at this event, it is up to each participant to decide how and what to contribute to this community.
The event takes place on an ancient lake bed in the Nevada Desert known as Playa. When the event is over and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event, there will be no trace of what was once the most populous city in the county.
The arts are an unavoidable part of the experience, and in fact, Burning Man Project founder Larry Harvey sets out a theme each year to foster a shared bond and help strengthen each individual’s contribution in meaningful ways.
Participants are encouraged to find ways to bring the theme to life, whether it’s through a large-scale art installation, theme camp, gifts for others, clothing, or any other medium you can think of.
This documentary about Burning Man gives insight into the program and beautifully captures what it’s like to be part of the Burning Man program.
