Dozens of important studies published in recent years have shown that the chemicals in marijuana have a dramatic effect in fighting almost every major cancer, including brain, breast, prostate, lung, thyroid, colon, skin, Laboratory and animal cancers, pituitary, melanoma and leukemia cancers. They did this by promoting the death of cancer cells that had forgotten how to die and reducing their vital blood supply, while leaving healthy cells untouched.
But, you might ask, why does marijuana have an effect on cancer? The answer can be summed up in one word – endocannabinoids. As amazing as it sounds, we are born with some form of marijuana in our bodies. It’s called the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, affects a variety of physiological processes. This complex system regulates energy intake and nutrient transport, metabolism and storage.
Endocannabinoids are an all-natural collection of compounds that are our endogenous form of cannabis and are involved in most of our cells and structures. They control many functions of the nervous, cardiac, reproductive and immune systems. Endocannabinoid messengers help cells communicate. Normally they protect our good cells while killing bad cells like cancer cells.
In all animals, the nervous system is made up of the same components — large numbers of nerve cells that transmit electrical signals. Wherever cells meet, these signals are passed on to receptors in the next cell via chemical messengers, a type of neurotransmitter. There are different types of neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. All animals, from rodents to fish, elephants to humans, inherit this basic structure, but hundreds of millions of years ago some primitive invertebrates invented an innovation for this system.
What happened was that the nervous system acquired a new chemical that was structurally related to the chemical found in marijuana. Because of this similarity, these new signals are called cannabinoids. Inevitably, marijuana will eventually meet its perfect partner – us.
