Fertility is the social responsibility of all reproductive women, a political ideology in Romania in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1966, Ceausescu issued Decree No. 770, which banned abortion for all women unless they were 40 years old or had taken care of four children.
All forms of contraception are completely banned. A new Romanian was born. By 1969, the country was having one million more babies than the previous average. Thousands of kindergartens were built overnight. Children must participate in sports and cultural activities.
Romanian society is changing rapidly. Using very interesting archival footage and clips of old films, and by interviewing famous figures of the era – gynecologists or new society mothers – the director recreates this period of severe repression of individual freedom.
Many of the deaths are solely the result of women, including Romanian secret agents, the wives of famous TV presenters and actresses, having to undergo illegal abortions. Many women were imprisoned for this.
