Corporate Fascism

It is clear today that corporations are raising and spending vast sums of money for the political campaigns of Presidents and members of Congress. The companies also spend vast sums hiring former administration officials to lobby Congress to pass legislation that primarily benefits their interests. If so, are we allowing entities other than humans to monopolize government?

The Founding Fathers were very concerned about using political power to benefit special interest groups, what they called factions—small segments of society that had their own selfish concerns that had nothing to do with the interests of others. So they want to limit as much as possible the ability of the government to engage in such behavior.

Our “interventionist” system today serves the interests of lobbyists who represent multinational corporations because they have influence. Some say we need lobbying reform to prevent lobbyists from engaging in lobbying, but that is not the answer because lobbying is petitioning the government and we have the right to do so.

There are two answers to this. First, if we had the right people in Washington, the right members of Congress, they wouldn’t succumb to the temptation to be influenced by money, and that doesn’t seem to be happening. The real solution is to shut down the government so that it can do favors so that businessmen have no incentive to lobby members of Congress.

Are we allowing corporate power to influence the making of laws that are not good for the people? Lawyers will argue that corporations are actually people. They will argue that they are even good corporate citizens. But are corporations really citizens, or even individuals? What about a multinational corporation, is it even a citizen of a particular country?
