The urban legend of realizing her youth has indeed come true; the two filmmakers delve into the mystery of five missing children, and the real-life demons linked to their disappearance.

Cropsey is a crime horror documentary written and directed by Joshua Zeman and Barbara Blancajo.

The film begins by investigating New York urban legend “Cropsey,” a demon-like character, before moving on to the story of convicted Staten Island child killer Andre Rand.

The origin of the name “Cropsey” is unknown. By the time the kidnapping described in the documentary took place, Cropsey had become the New York vernacular for any psychopathic violent criminal.

A detective interviewed for the film said the use of this generic label was enough to scare children because the name referred to an idea of a particular character rather than a simple archetype.
