Death of a Nation: The East Timor Conspiracy

On December 7, 1975, under the collusion of Western powers such as the United States, Britain, and Australia, Indonesia secretly invaded the small country of East Timor. Two Australian TV crews who tried to cover the intrusion have been murdered.

In 1993, with Indonesian troops still occupying the country, John Pilger and his crew, including director David Munro, sneaked into East Timor to shoot the film. Over the past 18 years, an estimated 200,000 East Timorese – a third of the population – have been massacred by the Indonesian army. The CIA described it as one of the worst mass killings of the 20th century.

Pilger tells the story using confidential footage from the country, internment camps and even fretlin guerrillas, as well as interviews with East Timorese exiles including Jose Ramos Horta and Jose Gusmao, as well as Australian, British and Indonesian diplomats.
