December 21 2012: The End Of The World

Humanity has been thinking about the end of the world and predicting how and when it might happen since records began. According to a 2007 New York Times article, “Gnostics prophesied God’s coming kingdom as early as the first century AD.” Set for the end date.

More recently, some doomsday predictors have focused on 2012. Citing the end of a long cycle in the ancient Mayan calendar, some theorists predict that life as we know it will end on December 21, 2012. These theorists believe that on January 21, 2012, Earth will experience an unprecedented catastrophic experience, experiencing events ranging from massive earthquakes and tsunamis to nuclear reactor meltdowns. To prepare for these events, some proponents of the 2012 prophecy have begun stockpiling survival supplies.

The major religions on Earth have their own beliefs about the end of the world, the triumph of good over evil, and Judgment Day. In Christianity, the last chapter of the Bible’s New Testament, Revelation, refers to Armageddon, the final battle on earth between God and Satan. The word Doomsday is thought to be of Hebrew origin and means “Mount Megiddo”.

Megiddo was an ancient city strategically located in present-day Israel and the site of several battles. Some Christians interpret Revelation as a road map detailing how the world will end. They claim that Judgment Day will take place at Armageddon and that Jesus will save the true believers while the remaining unbelievers will suffer greatly.
