Gamers will have a great day at DOOM Resurrected, an in-depth and entertaining look at one of the most influential sensations in video game history.

The first iteration of Doom was released to the public in 1993 by video game developer id Software. A seminal first-person shooter with an addictive player mode and compelling scenarios, Doom quickly set the standard for everything to come and instantly left consumers hungry for more. The company tried to satisfy the public’s appetite with the second and third chapters of the global phenomenon over the next few years. With increasingly complex graphics and complex narratives, these efforts were well received and extremely well paid.

id Software was then sold to ZeniMax in 2009, and development on the highly anticipated fourth chapter ceased. Are Doom’s developers overwhelmed by the pressure of high expectations and an industry that’s more competitive than ever? Have gaming’s most ardent fans witnessed the demise of a beloved franchise?

With the announcement of Doom 2016, hope returned. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Developers needed to create an experience that was both familiar and unique; a nod to the legacy of the past and a template for the future.

The filmmakers celebrate the long-awaited arrival of Doom 2016 with this ambitious three-part documentary. Each section offers insights from the game’s developers and programmers – many of whom have been involved with the franchise since its inception.

Titled “Hell and Return,” the first chapter delves into the history of the franchise and what contributed to its unprecedented popularity. Chapter Two – Making a First Impression – shifts the focus to the game’s latest iteration, as the developers discuss the challenge of updating a classic game while creating compelling graphics and story elements. The final installment – Guns, Guitars and Chess – explores the intricacies of battle design and the magical finishing touch of an enveloping score.

DOOM Resurrected is clearly the brainchild of fans of the game. But even mild enthusiasts will love seeing the actual creation process.
