El Chapo: CEO of Crime

Recent headlines herald yet another jailbreak for notorious drug dealer Joaquin Guzman, aka El Chapo. New documentary El Chapo: The Crime CEO examines the man behind the headlines, the unprecedented growth of his criminal empire, and his role in supplying drugs to nearly every corner of the world.

“Any community with dangerous drugs is likely to be directly or indirectly connected to shorties,” said former Drug Enforcement Administration official Phil Jordan. Other DEA agents and law enforcement officials have also attested to El Chapo’s reach and influence in perpetuating the global drug epidemic.

Shorty’s status as the world’s most wanted man has earned him near mythical status in some circles, but his origins are far from extravagant. Born and raised in poverty in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, he started working in drug trafficking at the age of 15. After coming to power as head of the Sinaloa Cartel in the 1990s, he used his intelligence and ingenuity to devise a plan to get drugs across America’s heavily militarized borders. He built a complex series of underground tunnels, painstakingly constructed by expert engineers in his hometown. Those tunnels would have allowed him to escape from a Mexican prison in the summer of 2015.

In painting his personal portrait of the modern-day Scarface, Shorty: Crime’s CEO relied on the testimony of a team of Univision reporters who worked for months to understand Shorty’s operations. Uncovering the details of his story, reporters uncovered not only the extent of his empire, but also how he managed to remain unattainable in the eyes of the judiciary. He is considered a hero by many of his fellows, who watch over and protect any outsiders who enter Sinaloa’s territory.

Like El Chapo, Hollywood’s major crime epic; Criminal President tells a riveting story of rags-to-riches rife with brutal violence, devastating human tolls and a crime virus that, unfortunately, seems to Too advanced and widespread to contain.
