Endurance runner and extreme athlete Nikki Kimball has set herself the seemingly impossible goal of becoming the fastest distance runner in history—a 273-mile course that cuts through the rugged terrain of Vermont. Finding Traction follows every step of their extraordinary journey.
The Long Trail, America’s oldest and longest hiking trail, spans ten marathons; an impressive challenge for even the most avid and successful runner. Kimball has won many of the world’s scariest marathons, but she believes the record-breaking achievement will define her life and career.
After two years of grueling physical training and a lifetime of intense mental preparation, Kimball began her journey on the edge of the Canadian border. Her ultimate goal is to break the previous world record of four days, 12 hours, 46 minutes, set in 2009 by marathoner Jonathan Basham. She employs a very dedicated team consisting of a doctor, a massage therapist, a nutritionist and various support staff who stay with her during her runs.
For Kimball, the trip meant more than just a place in the record books. She sees herself as a potential symbol to inspire others, especially as an athlete. Her runs also raise money for Girls on the Run, an organization that encourages young girls to take part in regular physical activity. Kimball found her place in the world through running a marathon, and she hopes other girls will find the same purpose in life through her example.
Finding Traction gives viewers the chance to participate in Kimball’s struggle and triumph with every step, jump and climb. Along the way, we witness their joyful chances at success as well as their moments of extreme physical torture, self-doubt, and mental exhaustion.
Will Kimball achieve her goal of breaking the previous world record? Whatever the outcome, Finding Traction offers a very inspiring look at what it takes to be a champion and what it takes to push the limits of human endurance.
