Ground Zero: Syria
Ground Zero: Syria is a compilation of Robert King’s photojournalism and videography that chronicles the destruction of the ancient city and the deaths of its citizens in an indiscriminate manner.
During a conflict between Assad’s security forces and the Free Syrian Army, fire spread through the historic Souk of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is covered.
Rebel fighters and activists have alleged that the fire was started by Assad’s troops using mortar rounds that are incendiary. The heinous crimes and atrocities in Syria are apparent in a field hospital in Aleppo, the city has the largest population in the country. Inside the hospital, exhausted doctors indiscriminately treat both civilians and Free Syrian Army members as well as captured Syrian soldiers.
Every day, men, women, and children risk their lives in order to stand in line and hope to buy a kilo of bread in order to have another day. Many of the bakeries have been destroyed during battles between the Syrian Free Army and Assad’s forces. The few that remain are staffed by brave individuals who risk their lives every day in order to provide the local populace with basic necessities.
During his time in Syria during the majority of 2012, the videographer Robert King followed the Aleppo-based Al-Tawhid Brigade as he dodged bullets and projectiles in order to learn more about the largest component of the Free Syrian Army.
