Hawaii: A Message in the Waves is a BBC Natural History film that examines some of the ecological challenges facing the people and wildlife of the Hawaiian Islands.

While the documentary is from a Hawaiian perspective, it is truly a global film. Because of its size, location, and social history, the Hawaiian Islands represent a microcosm of the planet and are in a unique position to tell us all what is wrong and what we can do to right it.

The ocean is an integral part of life for Hawaiians, not just for surfers. When you see huge waves crashing on the beaches of Hawaii, you’ll understand why: From a Hawaiian perspective, the ocean represents extreme beauty and an abundance of life.

The waves that carry this boon also carry a message. It is becoming increasingly clear that the ocean is at risk not only around Hawaii but around the world.

Now, scientists, surfers, conservationists and Native Hawaiians are mobilizing to tackle the problem. Hawaii: Messages in the waves tell of their efforts to clean up the waters and save the marine life that calls them home.
