North Vietnamese Communist politician, Prime Minister 1954-55 and President 1954-69. Trained in Moscow shortly after the Russian Revolution, he led the Communist Viet Minh from 1941 and fought against the French during the Indochina War from 1946 to 1954, becoming President and Prime Minister of the Republic in the Armistice.
With the support of the communist bloc, he did a lot to develop the industrial potential. He resigned as prime minister in 1955 but remained president. In the years before his death, Ho successfully led his country’s struggle against U.S.-backed South Vietnam in the 1954-75 Vietnam War.
