Hot Planet
Professors Iain Stewart and Kathy Sykes present the latest research on global warming ahead of the Copenhagen summit and examine what the world’s leading climate scientists think about the future of our planet.
Scientists predict that if global temperatures continue to rise at current rates, the planet will warm by 1 degree within 10 years, 2 degrees in the next 40 years, and 3 degrees or more by the end of the century.
If the planet’s temperature rose three degrees above the pre-industrial average, the impact on the planet would be catastrophic. Around the world, ways of life could be lost forever if climate change gets out of hand. However, it is not inevitable: climate change is not irreversible.
Advanced technologies and sciences are currently being developed, further developed and tested worldwide that can provide solutions for a sustainable future. The question that remains is, can the world accept and implement them on a sufficiently large scale within a valid time frame?
Global temperature increases must be slowed and eventually reversed if widespread damage to human societies and ecosystems is to be avoided. Hot Planet provides accurate visual predictions of Earth’s future, based on insights from more than 4,000 climate scientists.
