Indigo Children

Indigo Children, another provocative investigative article by VICE News, examines the claims of a small group of people who believe they have been endowed with mystical powers beyond human everyday understanding or capabilities. However, the medical community strongly disagrees with these claims. In their view, these individuals had the more common clinical diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

To uncover the truth behind these opposing views, investigative reporter Gavin Haynes took a deep dive into several members of the Indigo children’s community. These individuals formed factions across the country and met regularly to discuss what they considered their unique gifts.

Their New Age movement began in the ’70s when they were first identified by the indigo aura that enveloped them. They believe they are astral beings placed on our planet to help us achieve our higher purpose and spread beauty and grace around the world. They claim to have psychic and healing abilities and a strong spiritual core.

With a healthy dose of skepticism and humor, Haynes enjoys reading about the past lives of movement leaders, visiting a mother and daughter who run a holistic dental practice, and even attending a concert of the rap group whose art reflects Indigo’s Community Desire. Despite their unconventional beliefs, these individuals come across as likable, thoughtful, and confident.

The other side of the coin is the medical profession. Haynes spoke with a clinical psychologist who urged the subjects to be aware of the mental illness underlying their mysterious appearance. These people, he argues, have well-documented disorders, and their avoidance of proper treatment only deepens their descent into insanity and delusions. Her family isn’t immune to scrutiny, either, while doctors discuss her role in nurturing her child’s destructive thinking.

Indigo Children’s excursions are sometimes crazy, but always thought-provoking. The focus is on the eternal theme. It reveals the often fine line between genius and suffering.
