Jonestown: Paradise Lost

An evangelical pastor has led nearly 1,000 followers from the United States deep into the jungles of South America. They will forge a new community free of oppression and violence that will become their paradise on earth, but outsiders threaten to expose their leader’s dark side. In one day, the two worlds collide and Paradise disappears. In November 1978, journalists around the world broke the news that Jim Jones and more than 900 of his followers were dead.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, violence and civil war erupted on the streets of America. The Vietnam War, civil rights marches, and political assassinations were on television. Amid the din, thousands of Americans flocked to hear a sermon by a charismatic preacher named Jim Jones. His early speeches mixed socialist ideals with Christian salvation. Some turn to the Temple for help, others want to serve humanity, but whatever their needs, the Temple of Jim Jones and his people seems to have it covered.

Jim Jones claimed special powers to heal the sick and dying. Phased healing is a popular activity in temple meetings. As his profile grew, he preached less and more about social activism. He calls himself a prophet, a savior who guides, protects and watches over his followers. His loyal followers call him “Father”. Many signed their salaries, possessions, and even their homes. But at the height of his powers, a dark side to Jim Jones emerged. Former Temple members accused Jones of physical and sexual abuse, mind control and forced drug use. In 1977, as media interest grew, Jim Jones and hundreds of his supporters left San Francisco, California, for Guyana, determined to start a new community in the South American country.
