Julius Caesar’s Rome, a set of two DVDs, takes viewers back to ancient Rome, a civilization founded in 753 BC. It takes place on the banks of the Tiber River in modern-day Italy and ends in 1453 AD with the fall of Constantinople in modern-day Turkey. The first DVD tells the lives of Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra. The life stories of Antony and Cleopatra are too long due to some bad acting, so history buffs should steer clear.
The second DVD begins with the legendary founding of Rome in 753 BC. And ended with the reign of Justinian, the great emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire in the 6th century AD. The second DVD invites you to further explore Rome’s glorious past and its relevance to our Western societies.
The photographs on both DVDs are striking, the interviews with leading archaeologists are mostly entertaining, and Joe Mantegna’s narration is to the point and accessible.
