The Russian Revolution of 1917 was one of the most explosive political events of the twentieth century. The violent revolution marked the end of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of imperial Russian rule. During the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks, led by left-wing revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, seized power, destroying the tradition of tsarist rule. The Bolsheviks later became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
When was the Russian Revolution?
In 1917, two revolutions swept across Russia, ending centuries of imperial rule and sparking political and social changes that eventually led to the creation of the Soviet Union.
However, while both revolutionary events occurred within a few months of 1917, social unrest in Russia had been brewing for years before the events of that year.
In the early 1900s, Russia was one of the poorest countries in Europe, with a large number of peasants and a growing number of poor industrial workers. Most Western European countries regard Russia as an underdeveloped and backward society.
