In recent years, the gap between hard news and propaganda has become darker than ever. Viewers on both sides of the aisle observe an insidious media bias, whether they consume their news online, in the morning paper or on the late-night network. The presentation of alternative facts sparked palpable disillusionment and distrust from viewers. The documentary London Calling, based on author GA Ponsonby’s bestselling book of the same name, tells a shocking example of bias as it targets the BBC and its role in defeating the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.

Yes’ independence movement is rightly seen as an outsider, yet public support is growing. However, on the eve of the vote, much of the media showed a lukewarm reception to their campaign. This was the case with the BBC, a large and long-respected organization that many believe contributed to the movement’s demise. Key figures in the campaign, media insiders and rank-and-file voters have expressed dismay at the “yes” activists who have failed both at the polls and on their promises of an unbiased media.

Do you make sense? The evidence points to more than just sour grapes. This movie is full of BBC bias. Opponents cite a string of deceptive headlines, cheap tactics to create fear of a yes vote outcome, and coverage that fails to strike a balance between both sides of the issue. The group deliberately sidestepped the ongoing issues, scandals and controversies that have characterized the movement to vote against the pro-independence measure. Meanwhile, the leaders of the “Yes” movement were plagued by fabricated character assassinations and a barrage of exaggerated negative media coverage. Pro-union interests opposed to seeking independence dominated the show, while many Scots who held different views failed to make it.

For its part, the BBC claims to adhere to the strictest ethical standards of impartiality in its reporting. But as more and more viewers consume their media with an increasingly critical eye, the damage appears to have been done. The London Call reveals the importance of an unbiased media that truly represents the people, and the democratic disaster that can ensue without it. This is a terrifying potential that we all must contend with.
