In 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army rose up against the Mexican government and demanded the recovery of indigenous lands. Mexican troops and paramilitaries launched an offensive against pro-Zapata indigenous groups. Three years later, paramilitaries attacked a pacifist Tzotzil neighborhood called Acteal, killing some 45 people, including women and children. They all prayed for peace inside the church building.
Lupita was only 10 years old at the time. She lost her parents, sisters, grandmother and an uncle in the attack. Believing her life had a purpose, she stood up to the military without fear while defending the rights of Mexican women, survivors, and victims.
Lupita realized that what she was doing was not only risky, but a great sacrifice. She hopes that one day she will be able to see the results of all her hard work. If she doesn’t live long enough to see it for herself, Lupita believes her sons will. Watch this thought-provoking film now.
