It’s hard to believe that Maya culture flourished while the continent was mired in the horrors of the Middle Ages. Not only did the Mayans create an intricate written language, but they also far surpassed Europeans in the study and mapping of the stars and planets, mathematics and architecture. Originally shot in IMAX format, the film was designed to give viewers the feeling of literally climbing through the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala, before finally encountering the great Mayan ruins. Directors Brian Howells and Robert Rochinaya take their cameras and crews to inspect several of the most important Mayan ruins to see what clues and insights they can find.
Actress Susan Glover speaks in this adventure documentary, providing essential commentary on the location and actual purpose of the featured buildings. Larry Crossley and Dario Dominguez provided the musical score.
