Join EELS frontman Mark Oliver Everett as he explores parallel universe theory as he uncovers the extraordinary life story of his iconoclastic father, Hugh, creator of radical quantum physics, in this episode of the hit PBS series Rising Star.

Hugh Everett III, recognized by Scientific American as one of the most important scientists of the 20th century, proposed the controversial many-worlds theory as early as 1957.

The theory is based on the idea that parallel universes are constantly diverging from reality as we know it. Although generally ignored at the time, the theory not only became a popular research topic for respected physicists, but also served as the inspiration for popular movies, TV shows and books like Star Trek and The Golden Compass.

As a young boy, Mark never understood why his father was so distant. It’s not that Hugh doesn’t care about his family, it’s just that his mind is constantly swirling with ideas and concepts, and anything that pulls him out of his own thoughts is seen as some sort of distraction.

As the last surviving member of the troubled family, Mark interviews his father’s old college friends, colleagues, and admirers – including MIT physicist Max Tegmark – on an emotional journey that will bring This man, whom he barely knew during his lifetime, not only got better, but also better understood the ideas that continue to inspire physicists today.
