Pirate Fishing
Precious marine resources for some of the world’s poorest people are being plundered by industrial-scale predatory fisheries to supply hungry markets in Europe and Asia.
In a special two-part investigation, People and Power set out to identify and expose some of those involved in the multimillion-dollar trade, specifically researching its impact on the impoverished West African nation of Sierra Leone.
In the first part, journalist Juliana Ruhfus and producer Orlando von Einsiedel set sail out of Sierra Leone with the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), an NGO that is trying to raise awareness of the issue.
In the second part of Pirate Fishing, one of the trawler’s identities is revealed, and in the thrilling climax, the captain and crew are confronted with evidence of their crimes.
