America’s vast array of public lands is a source of wonder and prosperity for its people. Across the country, generations of families have grown up on the land and derived immense support and spiritual significance from their impressive endowments. But the majesty of these lands is diminishing, and the families’ long-cherished way of life is under constant threat from the federal government, wealthy elites and private business interests. The beautiful documentary Public Trust: The Fight for America’s Public Lands, by acclaimed filmmaker and passionate environmental activist Robert Redford, explores the struggle between these interests and the determined will of the people.
640 million acres of public land are available to Americans for outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and rock climbing. Parks and nature trails are also often established in these places, many of which are still inhabited by generations of Aboriginal people.
But the country is also a potential cash cow for corporate interests because of its inexhaustible underground deposits of oil, gas, coal and uranium. As these companies continue to claim and consume the land—especially with limited regulation—environmental degradation has become apparent. The landform is incomplete and the water body is seriously polluted. From the mountainous plains of Utah to the Everglades of Florida, these land masses and intricate ecosystems are being irreparably damaged. Environmental protection is often eroded when it comes to making money.
These nefarious efforts have been criticized, protested, and sometimes thwarted by a conscientious group of activists unafraid to speak the truth to those in power. This confrontation between David and Goliath is at the heart of the film.
The film introduces us to the citizens who proudly proclaim their lineage that has lived and thrived on this land for centuries, and the climate change activists who work to hold government forces accountable for neglecting these precious natural resources. They are witnessing the activities of the current government, which they claim are jeopardizing the future of the planet, supporting greed and energy dominance.
