An inspirational film about a woman trying to light up her world. Rafea is an uneducated Bedouin mother from the Jordanian desert.
She had the opportunity to attend Barefoot Academy, where middle-aged women from impoverished communities train to become solar engineers and power their communities.
The Academy brings together women from all over the world. But learning electrical components without being able to read, write or understand English is the easier part. If Rafea is to complete the course, she must risk everything, including losing her child.
Women make up half of the world’s population yet make up a staggering 70 percent of the world’s poor. Of the 875 million illiterate adults in the world, two thirds are women.
Women work two-thirds of the world’s time, produce half of the world’s food, but only earn 10% of the world’s income and own 1% of the world’s wealth. On average, women earn half as much as men.
