Stupid in America is an ugly title for a public education program, but ugly things are happening in America’s public schools, and it’s time we deal with them. Kids at Abraham Lincoln High School in New York City told me their teachers were so boring that students fell asleep in class. “You know, you see kids running around the school smoking weed all the time, you know. It’s normal here,” one student said.
We tried “20/20? NYC school cameras that allow you to see and show you what’s going on in the school, but officials wouldn’t allow that. Officials in DC took us to the best local classrooms. We wanted to include typical classrooms but were rejected by the states.
Eventually, school officials in Washington, D.C., allowed “20/20? to give the cameras to some carefully selected students at two of their carefully selected schools. One of them was Woodrow Wilson High School. According to Newsweek, It’s one of the best schools in the U.S. But what the students record doesn’t inspire confidence.
