In 2007, Italian police raided the mansion of a mafia boss and made a startling discovery: a list of the mafia’s most sacred laws.
Here’s an incredible discovery: the Mafia’s code of conduct. Now, for the first time, ex-gangsters are speaking openly about the rules that govern their criminal world; and revealing what happens when the underworld begins to question the Mafia’s so-called Ten Commandments.
The document clarifies that people who have police or informants in their households cannot be members of the mob. While gangster wives must be treated with respect, they shouldn’t expect much support during childbirth: the rules state that “it is a duty to always serve the Cosa Nostra – even if your wife is about to give birth”.
The Decalogue, along with a trove of other encrypted documents, was found in a house near Palermo, where Mr Lo Piccolo was arrested more than two decades after fleeing police. Investigators say the documents – including the Ten Commandments – will give them insight into how the mafia operates.
The documents also revealed details of mafia-linked companies and information about the organization’s internal hierarchy.
