Murders can be most heinous when they happen randomly, in part because the murderer believes they are equal to God with the right to make the final judgment. That’s the hallmark of the brutal killings in India by Pakistan-based terrorists, a hellish episode deftly recreated by the HBO documentary “The Terror in Mumbai.”
The leader of the group chose an extremely profane name: The Righteous Army, a terrorist organization whose leaders openly seek to increase fear in the world. They say they have no ties to Al Qaeda, but they have a lot of jargon and humble aspirations.
They also want to be widely vilified like Al Qaeda; how ambitious? Some young people expressed disinterest in lofty goals, opting for the bare minimum imaginable. As documented in HBO’s hour-long report, the killings are deeply reprehensible — a grim display of primal and arrogant evil.
