With the advent of self-driving cars, smart home networks, and machines that can replace factory workers around the world, artificial intelligence has permeated much of our lives. What are the possibilities and limitations of these technologies? Leading experts in AI design and manufacturing join forces during the production of DW documentary The Big Reset 2.0.

In a warehouse in Germany, we watched as a robotic arm laboriously picked up a pair of pliers and moved them from one box to another. Unfamiliar with the form, weight and proper grip required for the exercise, the machine’s AI capabilities help it refine and relearn the task until it is successfully completed. Here’s an example of a technology in its early stages of development — a self-learning machine that can run on its own database of programmed thoughts.

For more delicate tasks that require high precision or repeatability, these techniques already outperform humans. But they’re still a long way from mastering the complex sensory capabilities of our species.

The film presents the development and use of artificial intelligence as a constant balance of opportunity and risk.

A developer in New Hampshire who lost both legs in a tragic climbing accident spurred him to create prosthetics that use AI to function intuitively. These systems help empower people with disabilities as they work to regain an active quality of life.

On the other hand, IT companies use AI to adapt content to our browsing habits. This impressive feature is a double-edged sword. It offers more convenience to users, but it can also be used to spread fake news.

Furthermore, given the current limitations of AI technologies, it is also important to consider where they may go in the future. After all, smarter, more general AI is developing at record speed. This is the theme of the film. When will AI completely replace humans? When should we step in to limit this progression? The Great Reset 2.0 warns that if we don’t act now, we may unknowingly lose our value in society.
