The Cancer Sell

The film was made because Sarah Macdonald wanted to learn more about alternative cancer treatments and the clinics behind them.

This seems easy at first. These facilities advertise their services with glossy brochures and online video testimonials, such as how a woman named Lorraine Weaver described how she responded to recommendations for conventional medical treatment for lung cancer:

“They said they would do chemo and radiation and I said I don’t think so. I went out and called my niece and she said you go to Hope Oasis… I came down and I was healed and I thank God every day and never give up hope.”

She felt that this statement was not surprising at all. Clinics often claim survival rates that exceed anything traditional oncologists can offer — complete cures when all else fails.

If you’ve just been told that conventional medicine can’t do anything else for you, the appeal is easy to understand. So you abandon rational thinking, call your travel agent, and find yourself in Los Angeles on a bus tour of the Tijuana Clinic.
