The Curse of Oil

A three-part series that embarks on an insightful journey across the world’s oil-producing regions beyond the familiar territories of the Middle East. Now, oil prices seem to be rising relentlessly, and newspapers are full of dire predictions about our growing dependence on perishable oil reserves. Bill Cran’s collection takes a slightly different approach.

In fact, we still have a lot of oil on our planet. The problem is, much of it is due to what our spoiled addicts think is wrong. To get enough gas to fill George Bush’s SUV, you must deal with the evil government or destroy the wilderness. But the relationship between oil companies, consumers and residents of oil-producing regions is changing rapidly. Local residents risk obstructing oil companies.

Crane’s series feels like it has no easy answers — and that’s not a bad thing, because of the hysteria surrounding the subject. It’s also beautifully shot.
