Iraqi civilians were tortured and killed on an unprecedented scale, with an estimated 655,000 dead. Night after night, death squads rampaged through Iraq’s major cities. In Baghdad, up to a hundred bodies are thrown into the streets every day. They are often tortured with electric drills. But the perpetrators had little to do with al Qaeda or Sunni insurgents. Most of the killings were carried out by Shia death squads intent on turning Iraq into a Shia state allied with Iran.
This powerful film examines the links between death squads and senior Shia politicians. It shows how Shia militias controlled by these politicians systematically infiltrate and take over police forces and even entire ministries. It explores how these units are closely related to the Expendables, and indeed they tend to be the Expendables. The killers are on the loose—their activities are rarely investigated.
