David Graham Scott grew up disgusted with animal slaughter and chose a vegan lifestyle. For nearly 40 years, he perfected the vegan lifestyle. He’s strict about this belief system, and it’s not challenged. Then he met Guy Wallace.
Guy thinks that hunting is a very, very basic thing for humans. Humans, the hunters, went straight back into the mists of time. But today, the government seems to want everyone to end up being a clone of everyone else, teetotalling, non-smoking, left-wing, politically correct, pacifist, vegetarian. He said it was not the British who conquered half the world two centuries ago.
This ancient colonial remnant has barely had time to make its way into the modern world. Hunting is in his blood and at the age of 73 this is his last chance to return to Africa and relive its glory days. He wanted to shoot one of the so-called Big Five, the dreaded Buffalo Cape. Vegan David went with him.
Despite their polarized views, Guy welcomes David into his world. As the first step of their journey, he took Guy to the big house on the estate. The landlord asked him to put some of the booty there. He leads a hunting party in the wilderness to take revenge. David had to admit that it was absurd for someone of his faith to be interested in this ancient hunting culture. But Guy as a character piqued his interest. He wanted to understand how one person’s disgust could be another’s pride.
Guy’s great-uncle Arthur was a big influence on Guy becoming the man he became. He worked for the Indian Forest Service and shot a man eating a tiger.
Guy has made a conscious choice to live a life of solitude in the desolate Caithness Moors. The trailer was meant to be a temporary home until he fixed the old cabin behind the trailer. David was impressed with Guy’s self-sufficiency. It is certainly not an easy task for this old man to make a way in this rugged environment. But then again, he’s always lived like that.
Guy’s life is like a boy’s adventure story in the 1950s. He entertains David with stories of his travels in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He had witnessed countless atrocities, which hardened his attitude. Over the next few weeks, Guy took David on various expeditions. He definitely wanted to prepare him for Africa and introduce him to the basics of hunting.
