The Evolution of Ecological Consciousness
Part of what Andrew Faust is doing is teaching how to apply permaculture in urban landscapes, and part of what he’s going to show in this video is the wealth of information he’s collected over the past 20 years as an educator and his 8 years of living from , collecting nets. Permaculture is a state of mind, a way of looking at things, and what Andrew will show is a way of seeing ourselves as biological organisms, deeply rooted in the matrix of life on Earth.
According to astrophysicists, the oldest stars and our universe are about 14.5 billion years old. We know that there are many galaxies in the universe… We are located in the outer arm of the Milky Way, one of many galaxies. We spin with the earth, spin with the galaxy, and expand with the universe.
This is a very dynamic system. It’s been around for a long time, so it’s an ancient universe and we have a huge legacy. We are the biosphere, and how we behave now really determines the future. Earth is a biological entity, a self-regulating organism, and we need to understand how to live in ways that relate to the larger dynamics of the planet.
There is no Big Brother or creation entity concerned with humanity. How do we figure out how to live intelligently, define how the planet works, how did humans come about and who do we owe our existence to?
Just 500 million years ago, continents were scattered in very different places on Earth. The continents changed, so did the Earth, and plate tectonics was not understood in geology until the 1970s. We didn’t agree that there was such a thing as an ice age until the 1930s. Our understanding of the planet is constantly evolving.
