The Future of Energy
In the opening moments of this inspiring new documentary, “The Future of Energy,” we take a guided tour of Greensburg, Kansas, a seemingly quintessential Midwestern city of fewer than a thousand people. In 2007, a violent tornado hit the city, destroying most of the buildings and infrastructure. Undaunted, the community has chosen to rebuild, harnessing the same force that caused their destruction: the wind. Today, Greensburg is powered entirely by 100% renewable wind energy. Her shining example sets the stage for the rest of the film, prompting the need for similar progressive action in every city around the world.
In our modern society, few issues are more pressing than energy. Currently, most of the world’s energy is generated by burning fossil fuels, a process that has proven to be detrimental to the health and safety of our planet and all its inhabitants. In addition to the consequences of climate change, our unsustainable energy usage habits are putting enormous pressure on the world economy, exacerbating financial instability for households around the world.
According to the many experts featured in the film, the answer is a powerful clean energy trio of wind, water and solar. Renewable energy could power the world by 2050, according to researchers. We can use these technologies. What we seem to lack is the social and political will to make ubiquitous renewable energy a reality.
Energy independence is only possible when communities move away from systems that still rely on outdated and polluting technologies. The Future of Energy takes us on a journey to discover how across America, as citizens band together to equip their homes and businesses with solar panels and various additional steps on the clean energy ladder. With infectious enthusiasm, The Future of Energy spotlights the many everyday people at the forefront of the clean energy revolution and shows us that the ability to make positive change in the world begins with the individual.
