More than a hundred years ago, in July 1910, Captain Robert Falcon Scott set off from England on his ill-fated expedition to Nova.
Scott’s goal is to be the first person to reach the White Heart South Pole in Antarctica. Early filmmaker Herbert Ponting followed him on much of his journey.
Ponting’s unique film about the expedition, The Great White Silence, has been digitally restored by the British Film Institute and has had its world TV premiere on the Discovery Channel to coincide with the anniversary of Terra Nova’s departure from Cardiff.
James Cracknell, who took part in his own Antarctic expedition last year, will compare his modern Antarctic trek — gear, diet, mental challenge and physical preparation — to Scott’s eventual harrowing voyage , making this already legendary voyage a new voyage to give history perspective.
