The Gulf Stream and the Next Ice Age tells the story of global warming’s impact on the Great Atlantic conveyor belt, which has to do with climate regulation, and there are fears that melting ice will hold it back and possibly spark an ice age.

In the fight against climate change, there is no enemy to fight, only our attitude. – Nicolas Koutsikas, Director. Climate change is on the international political and social agenda. Our climate is changing, with industrial production, habitats, transportation and everyday human activities being blamed for global warming.

The Gulf Stream and the Next Ice Age is a one-hour documentary that examines the findings of a recent U.S. government report that predicts a collapse of the thermohaline circulation will occur around 2010, bringing a small Ice Age. Can Dublin have a climate like Spitsbergen, can London have a climate like Siberia? The Gulf Stream is a powerful surface water current driven by trade winds.

It originates in the Gulf of Mexico, carries tropical waters from the Florida Straits to the Great Coast of the United States, and flows eastward, bringing warmer waters to the border of the North Atlantic Ocean. Once tropical water meets the Arctic Ocean, it cools suddenly and rolls toward the deep ocean, forming a loop known as the thermohaline circulation. Then, like a giant conveyor belt slowing down in the depths of the ocean, it moved south to rejoin the start of the Gulf Stream.
