The Hitch

Christopher Hitchens, journalist, author, maverick, some might say literary badass, known for throwing out his wit and taking some very unpopular viewpoints, if you hate him for that…  Well, he’s okay with that. But Hitchens’ work has appeared in some well-respected publications, and he’s an editor at Vanity Fair. He was born in Portsmouth, England, and his mother is said to have said: “If there was high society in this country, Christopher would be there.”

So Hitchens went to an upscale private school, later studied at Oxford, started writing in the 70s and became a fixture in left-wing media for a long time. But after 9/11, things started to change. Sitch supported the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan and opposed the so-called free media. In fact, that’s why he ended his 20-year relationship with The Nation.

He emigrated to New York, seized political power, and throughout his life he cast a grim gaze on Henry Kissinger, the Clintons, and even Mother Teresa. When he writes about public figures and politics, people listen, but perhaps his most enduring legacy is his atheism. His most famous atheist book is God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Christopher Hitchens died on December 15, 2011 in a hospital in Houston, Texas. He ended his reign as perhaps the most articulate and stubborn intellectual of his generation.
