Paul Bernado and Karla Homolka are Canadian serial killers whose convictions for the rape and murder of teenage girls, including Karla’s own sister, Tammy Homolka, have sparked received worldwide media attention.
These two serial killers were part of a rather unique group of killers who killed together as a couple. Paul Bernardo also admitted to raping many other women over the years, and he eventually got Karla involved. The question most people ask when they hear about these murders is why did Kara do it?
We may never have all the answers to these questions, but we certainly have some. Carla actively participates in the killing, even having sex with the girls, mostly because of Paul’s affection and his urging. This is the basis of Karla’s defense and the argument she made to reach the deal that allows her current release. Karla Homolka served 12 years in prison for her involvement in the murder alone.
One thing we do know is that Karla was physically and mentally abused by Paul Bernardo during their relationship. The records clearly show the brutal beatings and horrific emotional abuse committed by Paul Bernardo. Confusingly, however, Kara never attempted to come out. She comes from a supportive family that will definitely try to protect her. Could it be that she was still afraid that Paul would hurt her or her?
