Rodney Alcala was a convicted rapist and serial killer. He was sentenced to death in California in 2010 for five murders between 1977 and 1979 and faces charges in New York for two more. His true death toll is still unknown and could be higher.
He is sometimes referred to as the “Date Game Killer” because of his murder spree when he appeared on the 1978 US TV show “The Date Game”.
A police officer called him a “killing machine” and detectives compared him to Ted Bundy. A homicide detective familiar with the evidence speculated that Alcala may have murdered as many as 50 women, while other estimates put as many as 130.
